  • Evolving Nairobi Street Names from the 1960s is a book written by Wangeci Kanyeki and narrated by her dad, Joseph N’gang’a Gachanja. The book aims at the preservation of a part of Nairobi’s historical heritage of street names and is a narration of thespian Joseph N’gang’a Gachanja who has witnessed the changing of Nairobi’s street names over the decades. As a creative master Performing Artist that he is, Joe Gachanja has captured his narrations and recollections of Nairobi’s streets, banks, hotels, markets, transport systems and how they have morphed over the years since the 1960s. He has a contagious passion for media, culture and the arts; in particular photography, theatre and the artists who come alive on their respective stages to courageously tell their stories. He has acted on Plays in Kenya such as Government Inspector, Kongi’s Harvest and Muntu; Acted in award winning films such as Burned Forest and Spensa and State House where he acted as President Barack. Joe Gachanja has also acted in various television series such as Machachari as Mzee Kobe, Tabasamu and Zora on Citizen TV, Changes on M-Net and Inooro TVs vernacular Television show Njuka Kahora. In his acting career he has shared stages with prominent thespians like Late Anne Wanjugu, Paul Onsong’o Late Sam Otieno, Late Tony Msalame, Jimmi Kamunde, A. G. Githu Muigai, Raymond Ofula, Jimmy Gathu, Greg Adambo and Edwin Nyutho. In addition, Joe Gachanja has acted in over 40 adverts. He married Jacqueline Wambura in 1965 and they have 6 children: Kariuki, Wanjiru, Wambui, Wangeci, Wamwirua, Gachanja and numerous grand-children – many of whom have taken up his passion for performing and media arts. This book is a co-creation between Joseph Gachanja and his children  Wangeci and Gachanja who have co-created this historical heritage project on Evolving Street Names of Nairobi.
